Ms. Stein’s Top Ten List

THE TOP TEN WAYS TO SUCCEED IN LANGUAGE ARTS CLASS

10.  Keep your tickets/gift certificates in a safe place.  You may turn in five tickets if you are unprepared for class (See #5 below).  Unused tickets can be traded in for gifts from Ms. Stein’s store twice a year.

 9.  Take your assigned seat and begin working on the “Daily Edit” as soon as you enter the room.  If you are late to class, please bring a pass.  If everyone is working quietly when the teacher is ready to begin, the class will receive a point.  These points may be redeemed for class rewards.

 8.  Follow all of the rules in the student handbook.  Try to be a good listener and raise your hand to be recognized.  In addition, please follow directions the first time they are given.  Do not leave your seat without permission, do not eat food in class, and please go to the rest room and get drinks before or after class (not during class unless it is an emergency).

 7.  Please use the following heading on all your papers:

                   Full name                                            Assignment (or page number)

                   Complete date

 6.  You must have a separate three-ring binder for language arts ONLY.  This will help you to become organized.  It should be kept in good order and must be brought to class daily.  Please divide it into the following sections: Daily Edit, Grammar, Spelling, Writing, Vocabulary, and Reading.  This must be in class every day.

 5.   Be prepared.  Come to class every day with the proper books (covered), your binder, a pen (blue or black ink only), a pencil, and your agenda.   If you are missing any of these items, you are unprepared for class, and this will affect your grade.  All written work must be completed in pencil or blue/black ink ONLY.  All final drafts should be word-processed (by you).  If this is not possible, see your teacher for special permission to write a final draft in blue/black ink.

4.  Make up all work you miss when you are absent.  It is your responsibility to see the teacher after you return to school so you can be sure you have made up everything required.

3.  Write down your assignments and be sure to submit them on time.  Notice that daily homework makes up 25% of your marking period grade.  Develop good study habits, do your homework neatly and carefully, keep up with your reading, and study for tests.  Homework Hotline #775.

2.  See the teacher immediately if you have a problem or if there is something you don’t understand.  She is available for extra help by appointment and will be happy to do whatever she can to help you succeed.

1.  Do your best!!!  If you do all of your work, get help if you need it, and put forth your best effort, the teacher guarantees you will do well.  Let’s make this a wonderful learning experience and a great year!

The Accelerated Reader Program

Ms. Stein – Grade 6

          Accelerated Reader is an independent reading program that gives you an opportunity to read books of your choice, although you must read books from the Accelerated Reader list.  There is a list of these titles in each L.A. classroom and in the school library.  It is also on the KTS web site.  If you have a copy of a book that is on the list but is not from our school or classroom library, be sure to ask your teacher to verify that it is the edition that will be tested.  (The tests are designed so reading abridged versions or watching a movie version will not allow you to pass the test.)

          After you have completed the book, you will take a computerized Accelerated Reader test on it.  The reading level of the book(s) you choose, the length, and the quality of your comprehension will comprise 25% of your reading grade for the marking period.  The higher the reading level and the longer the book, the higher the point value.  If you score 100% on the test, you will receive the total point value of the book.  If you do not score 100%, the point value will be less.  If you do not pass the test, you will not receive any points.

          It is extremely important that you select books that you will understand and enjoy, and your teacher will help you with your choices.  Do not choose books that are too difficult for you!   You will probably be more successful reading several short, easy books than one long, difficult book.  It is also important to PLAN AHEAD, so you have ample time to meet the requirements each marking period!  You may read as many books as you wish to obtain the required points.

Reading Workshop Rules

Your teacher will help you select books on the appropriate reading level.   Remember, it is important to

read and understand the book; you will not pass the test if you don’t understand it.

Your book must be approved in writing by your L.A. teacher before you may begin to read. You may not

read books that you have already read, nor may you read books that are part of the middle school literature program (unless your teacher approves).  Don’t forget that your teacher has your book card.

Your Accelerated Reader book should be in class with you daily.  When you finish your class work, you

 should read it.  In addition, you will have class time once a week during “Reading Workshop” to read this book.  Most of the reading, however, will be done on your own time.  You should be reading this book at home every night that you do not have other LA reading.  During Reading Workshop, you MUST have your approved A.R. book with you.  It should be in class with you even if you have completed it.

All students must participate in reading conferences with the teacher before taking a test on the

book.  Students should have read at least half of the book before scheduling a conference.  Conferences will be held only during Reading Workshop class.

If you have completed your book and are ready to take a test, you MUST bring a new book to class

 with you so you can begin reading it after you have completed the test.  Be sure to have AR books approved in writing .

You will keep track of your reading on your reading log.  It is your responsibility to keep it up to date

 and accurate.

If you are absent for “Reading Workshop,” you must make up the reading time at home.  Your teacher

will give you a form for your parent to sign to  verify that the reading has been completed.  If this form is returned before the next Reading Workshop class, you will receive full credit for that class.

If you do not have your approved book in class during “Reading Workshop,” you must read another

book.  You may not do homework.  If you make up the reading time and return the form with your parent’s signature by the due date, you will receive half credit for that class.

If you obtain the maximum number of points before the end of the marking period, you may read a

book of your choice.

     Reading Workshop is serious reading time.  During “Reading Workshop” everyone will be reading, and there will be no interruptions to disturb the teacher or other readers.  No one will leave the classroom unless it is an absolute emergency.

 Grades

·        Your AR test grade will comprise 25% of your reading grade for the marking period.  You have complete control over this.  Read a lot....read carefully....and plan ahead!

·        If you are in the high L.A. class, you MUST read books on or above your grade level.  The reading level of some new additions and classics have been adjusted so they are acceptable on the 8th grade level.  This list changes periodically; check with your teacher or librarian for this listing.

·        AR points do not carry over from one marking period to another.

·        You will receive one extra credit point for every point over the maximum that you earn, with a maximum of 10 extra credit points per marking period.

·        Accelerated Reader Test Points/Grades:

Grade 6

                                                A = 10.0 points          = 100%

                                                B =   8.0 -   9.9 points = 90%

                                                C =   7.0 -   7.9 points = 80%

                                                D =   6.0 -   6.9 points = 70%

                                                F  =  Below 6.0 points = 60%*

*Note: If you read a book and take a test but score below the required number of points, you will receive 60%.  If you do not read the book and take the test, you will receive a 0.

·        You will receive a separate classwork grade for coming to class with your AR book daily, using your reading time productively, and conferencing with your teacher.

·        You will receive a separate homework grade for reading your AR book regularly on your own time.
